HG Walter reviews
I've lived down the street from H.G. Walter for several years now. The neighbourhood butcher is, regretfully, a thing of the past in most places. What makes H.G. Walter even more special is the quality, variety and passion they provide customers. An oft-heard complaint is that exceptional customer service is unavailable in the UK these days. I challenge anyone who makes this assertion to visit our local butcher in Barons Court.
by mdrake97, 04 Apr 2008It should be higher than the 4th nicest thing in London! Awesome establishment.
by Meatlover1 (2 reviews), 10 Mar 2008100% the best butcher in Europe. I have lived and worked in 8 cities in Europe and have a real passion for meat. Truly amazing quality butchers, only the best quality meat, always handled with care. The guys obviously have a real passion for what they do!
by MIkeS, 01 Nov 2007I love these guys... When looking for a new flat/house, my biggest prerequisite was that I needed to be close to my favourite butchers. They are always happy, and take time to offer advice and cooking instructions. I LOVE THEM!
by druss, 23 Oct 2007Wow - traditional family butcher with core family values. The Caledonia crown beef is out of this world.
by rtufton (2 reviews), 13 Sep 2007Fantastic, friendly butchers always willing to offer advice and assistance.

by Nathan Barley, 07 Feb 2007I have lived in London for nearly 6 years. For the first couple of years I struggled to find good quality meat without needing a second mortgage (disappointing, as I'd always been spoilt growing up surrounded by farm shops galore). My life seriously changed when I discovered HG Walter. These guys are amazing. The choice is endless - I never know what to try next , it's all just SUPERB! Well hung steaks to die for, lamb noissettes stuffed with wild boar, apple, spinach and mustard... I could go on all day. Keep it up guys!
by Anonymous, 19 Dec 2006I visited HG Walter after reading reviews on this website. I wanted to try a really good ribeye steak and I believed that the quality from a good butchers who supervise the selection and hanging of the meat in-house would be superior to those purchased in a supermarket. I would have gone out of my way to visit given the excellent reviews on this website, but thankfully it was (kind of) on my way home.
Firstly, the service is excellent and (as the cookbooks advise) they actually ARE pleased to tell you more about where the meat originates from and whether it is a cross-breed etc. Secondly, the meat is superb. Dearer than a supermarket (I think) but the quality is worth it and also it's good to support an independent butchers. I will definitely be going back and I advise you to pay a visit also.
Fantastic friendly service. Excellent range of pre-prepared dishes as well as anything else you may want!
by londonman, 23 Mar 2006Excellent family-run butcher. If you have not visited then you have not experienced high quality meats and specialities!
by Anonymous, 14 Nov 2005My Mother, being a war child, impressed upon me from an early age the importance of keeping in with your local butcher. As a teenager I ignored this advice, even muttering at some point that meat is murder. Once the hormone rush had settled down and the sheer delight of a bacon sandwich had tempted me back to the ranks of the meat eaters, I realized just what sound advice she had passed on.
I became a mother myself at the height of the B.S.E. scandal when we were subjected to the gruesome sight of John Gummer force-feeding his offspring some dreadful donkey-burger. Meat and where it came from became my mission, so finally I get to the point: in my opinion you can go no place better to be sure of the quality and provenance of your meat than H.G. Walter family butcher, of Barons Court.
The business really is family run, with charming and knowledgeable staff that are always pleased to help you. Last night I nervously prepared a 40th birthday meal for a very dear friend who also happens to be a chef, knowing his passion for veal I plumped for veal chops, I served the char-grilled beauties with garlic and rosemary, roasted spuds and creamed spinach, the verdict.. better than The Ivy. It could be that I'm a genius cook, or is it that like my Mother always told me, I've kept in with the butcher!
London's best kept secret. It's worth buying a flat in Baron's Court to be able to shop every day at this family run butchers. They have so much on offer; vegetables and necessities aside, they have the best sausages in the capital; their black pudding is a fantastic way to start the weekend; well hung lamb; extraordinary sirloin beef and steak mince you could eat raw. I could go on. Delicious.
by a local carnivor, 08 Jul 2005By far the most courteous shop in the whole of Barons Court and West Kensington. And the produce is terrific.
by Anonymous, 10 Jun 2005Superb butchers, the only consolation for living in this drab corner of London is the ability to fire up the barbie and throw some of this delicious, organic meat on the fire.
I love it.
My local butchers is absolutely fantastic. Love their organic ribs of beef and as an avid cook am impressed by their food knowledge and cookery tips.
