Meat City reviews
I agree that Nigel is an absolute blessing and his pride and care in what he sells is immediately obvious. He can be a little grumpy if you ask for what he terms as 'supermarket cuts' like chicken thighs (a hell of a lot tastier and cheaper than the breast meat that he'll push you to buy instead) but overall the man knows his stuff and sells great produce. I bought some pheasant from him last year that was a world above the stuff I usually get at Borough Market - beautifully cleaned and plucked, without the usual half broken feathers that you have to fuss with for 20 minutes with tweezers.
Nigel also has a hanging room in the back where he hangs the beef for a further week or two to ensure that his meat is tender and beautiful. And his location means that you can easily call in on the way home from work if you work in the city.

I wish I could tell you that Nigel's meat was awful, so that everyone would stay away and I'd have it all to myself! But I can't. I can't lie, and I can't do Nigel the disservice of removing all his customers. Special meals (including every Christmas) wouldn't be the same without Nigel's brilliantly chosen meat, whether it be beef or goose. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!

Nigel really does know his stuff and stocks some excellent meat, a large proportion of which is free range. The free range chickens (the ones with the label on the breast) are the best I have tasted. Lamb is superb. Very flavoursome beef (including some super thick t-bones). Good selection of game too. I actually rate the bacon quite highly - make sure you ask for the free range stuff. I've never found Nigel to be rude and he always has some good banter.

Everyone has a bad day occasionally, frankblack. I'll bet if you went in to Nigel's shop again you'd be treated with the utmost respect, as he has always treated me.
Isn't the meat he sells simply fantastic? Much of that is down to the good treatment of the animals Nigel insists on from his suppliers. How many other butchers would bother with that? He's a good man.

I have had ribs of beef, legs of lamb, shoulder of lamb, veal, chicken, bacon and venison from Nigel. All has been absolutely first rate. He holds some forthright views about farming and food, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and he has been proved right every time for me!

I don't understand the grumpiness comments either. He may be a bit of a character (personally, I am not that into the Daily Mail clippings on the counter, for example) but has never been rude to me and his produce is excellent. Yes, it's expensive but I would sooner eat four ounces of mature rump from here than a big bit of fillet from most of the cheap meat supermarkets which pass for butchers in London.
Tip (I may regret this): you can tell he's a proper butcher because he will always find you some beef or pork bones for making stock.

Meat City supplies top quality beef, lamb (hogget) and pork. Nigel will give you as much advice and help about cuts and cooking as you need and is very knowledgeable about his suppliers and the breed of animal he sells. His suppliers hang their meat (and not in vacuum packs) and he also hangs the meat to ensure tenderness. He is extremely personable and knows the names of a huge number of his customers. Never have I been let down. Although it's not the cheapest, it's what we should all expect to pay for such well farmed meat.

I have been going to Meat City regularly for 6 years now and don't understand the reviews that describe Nigel as stroppy or abusive. He's friendly and helpful and treats his regulars well. And of course the meat is first rate (although I agree probably not best for bacon).

The owner was quite pleasant and helpful when I went there. He was honest about what he thought was the best and even gave me some cooking tips. Haven't tried the meat yet but the quality looked very good indeed.

The quality is very good, but sadly I won't be going back - I'm just not in to this idea of having to take abuse when you're the customer...

Top bloke? Are you kidding? The most miserable, stroppy, patronising butcher I've ever met. But sells great produce and knows his stuff. If you don't mind being yelled at for no apparent reason... go there!

Not best for bacon, (though some nice Polish smoked stuff) but great for well-hung beef and flavoursome pork. Best to call and order, to make sure he has what you want.

Have we missed a great butcher in London? Let us know.
