Theobroma Cacao reviews
Heaven on earth! Not a chocolate shop for milk chocolate junkies, as this is more a dark chocolate connoisseur's kind of place. Cheaper than William Curley by a long shot and way better in my view.

I recommend this shop to anyone who likes very, very good chocolate indeed. The shop owner and staff have always been as delightful and sweet as their divine chocolate. Food for the Gods indeed. I have never been treated badly or smelled anything untoward.

Truly awful service. I bought an expensive Easter egg for my girlfriend recently. The chocolates inside had some mould on. I tried to return them and was subjected to a verbal assault by the owner, who appeared unable and unwilling to take any criticism. Another customer in the shop overheard our altercation and came up to me outside to say how shocked she was and would never use the place again. Not for the light-hearted who have any respect for the concept of customer service. The review at the top of this page mentions "friendly service" - this is just not true. Beware!

This is a quite unbelievable place. A very expensive shop that might just about get away with it if the chocolate was as good as it is cracked up to be. What we bought here was stale and tasteless.
However, the really amazing part about this place is only revealed when you dare to complain. The service philosophy here is as unique and inappropriate as the chocolate is overpriced. Contrary to convention, 'the customer is always wrong' at Theobroma.
This ethos of customer care was delivered with an attitude that would at best be described as combative and eventually became downright threatening.
Hopefully the credit crunch reaper will do the necessary and save others from this experience. If not, I can only advise you stay well away.

Went yesterday after my friend mentioned the place. I liked the look and ambience of the shop but there was a bad smell (not a chocolate one) which, for me, left a bad taste in the mouth (literally, as chocolates pick up strong aromas easily).
I was very, very disappointed with the chocolates. I found them highly overpriced for the quality. There was nothing particularly inventive about any of their chocolates and I would be interested to know if they use hydrogenated fats in their products, as it tastes like they do. The chocolatier needs a bit more inspiration I think. I was also surprised there were no flavoured bars at all, just a white, milk and plain. For a chocolate shop, that is pretty remarkable. I found the chocolate coatings and ganache fillings far too heavy, with a bad, unrefined texture and taste.
So overall it was not a good experience. Spent £12 on a small handful of disappointing chocolates. Not impressed. £7.50 per 100g is way overpriced. Try Vahlrhona at Selfridges for £5 per 100g - AMAZING chocolates!

I had a hot chocolate in the shop, which was quite indulgent. Took away some choccies, too. But I didn't realise most of them were stuffed with marzipan! Chilli chocolate was too hot - I couldn't taste anything else for a while.

I read some reviews before going. Some were positive, but there were quite a few that talked about a chemical smell. When I went I literally just turned back out - it smelt like an oil factory, I didn't smell chocolate at all! Never again will I go there.

It's a shame because although the creations are interesting, not only is the owner not a 'people person', the chocolates have picked up the strange chemical cleaning smell in the shop (you may notice it when you go in, or taste it carefully in the chocolates) making them quite rancid. One member of staff seems nice, but the shop as a whole is a let-down.

I second the previous review. The owner is very rude and seems to delight in telling people he doesn't want or need their business. Go to Hotel Chocolat instead if you want any customer service.

Very disappointed with the management of this company. I ordered chocolates online for a gift; when I rang the shop the owner was very rude on the phone. Bad customer service.

The drinking chocolate and the setting is superb - just like in the film "Chocolat" and the staff delightful!

The hot chocolate mix is good enough to eat on its own. It's a lovely shop. I'm going there tomorrow, I think I'll have to see if I agree about the chocolate covered marzipan.

Like being in another world. Delicious chocolate, and a wonderful little taster corner! Good coffees too.

This shop's house hot chocolate, which you can enjoy inside the shop with a free (and delicious) chocolate of your choice, is my life support machine. Ten times better than Starbucks and practically the same price.
