Paper reviews
Don't bother with this place. The music is a good mixture of dance, pop, hip hop and classics, but it is crammed with bitchy posey girls and properly ugly men. Also very overpriced and the toilets were disgusting. None of the doors locked and every single one had a loo seat hanging off its hinges. Not even what you'd call a 'satisfactory' standard, and especially not what you expect of a poncey club that charges a £20 cover charge. Honestly, you'd have a better time in your local pub.
by detsneerg, 12 May 2008Terrible. The place epitomizes what is wrong with 'upscale' clubbing in London. The main problem is that it is not upscale at all - on the contrary. A few reviews below hit it spot on when they commented that the girls expect to leach on men for drinks. Very sleazy.
by swim73088 (12 reviews), 02 Apr 2008I spent the evening at Paper on my birthday. I chose to celebrate it there after speaking to the booker/event organiser Lin. She was amazingly helpful and straight away started to come up with ideas. Had the best night there and was made to feel so special. Staff, security and music were all great. Agree that the VIP area could be a tad nicer though.
by Daniel Burr (3 reviews), 24 Mar 2008Girls, be warned: if you don't like being treated like a whore then don't go to this club. Myself and 3 friends went on a Saturday, admittedly blagged our way into the club, mainly due to the fact my mates are pretty attractive.
After a while of standing around waiting for people to take their coats off in the main room, we were 'picked' from the dance floor (which was too crammed to dance and full of ugly men and underdressed tourists) to go and drink champers with some guys at a table on the raised 'we-have-more-money-than-sense' section.
After a while of trying to be polite and engage in conversation, and a couple of glasses later, the promoter who worked there pushed one of my mates back into the lower dance pit bit, then proceeded to tell the other two of us to f'off, as the guy who was splashing cash only wanted to 'keep one'.
Coupled with the terrible music and scantily clad dancers, this club is only going to please ugly rich guys who can't pull anywhere else and happen to have a few grand floating around. Horrible nasty cheap place - avoid!! Go somewhere where people are actually enjoying themselves!
Me and a group of my friends rang up and asked what offers they had. They assured us we'd have our own VIP section and free drinks. We paid, but when we got there it took ages for them to let us in, then when we got in we had a crappy small table and the one drink they brought us tasted like orange juice with no alcohol! Hardly any English people (as usual) and a shit night. West End clubs are highly overrated.
by Katybrown88 (2 reviews), 16 Jan 2008Yep, they don't like non-whites here. But hey, that's business as usual with clubs! Just means no one can dance inside...
by thepreacher (5 reviews), 02 Jan 2008I am a regular at Paper and most of the West End clubs, and I just can't believe people bother to go to all the WEST END clubs and complain about price... What do you really expect?? This club is one of my favourites - great staff, doorman can actually have a laugh, VIP could be a bit more classy but is still good. Would recommend it!
by read06 (2 reviews), 18 Nov 2007I was in London for a holiday and decided to go to Paper. The hotel I was in (Hyatt Churchill) sent an email to the club to put me and my husband on the guest list. An email reply was sent to my hotel confirming we were on the guest list - in fact, they gave me a copy of the email.
However, when we got to Paper we were greeted by an arrogant, impolite manager who informed us we were not on the guest list and that we could not enter the club. In the mean time, people he liked went in.
I would not recommend this club to anybody, but would recommend Pangaea any time - I went there several times and everybody is treated the same there.
Absolutely appalling. Full of wannabe kids spending daddy's money. People don't dance, they just stand around and pout. It's a joke. Terrible mix of music - felt like a student union bar. Avoid, unless you're desperate...
by hamness22, 21 Jul 2007Avoid this wannabe lair like the plague. I have no qualms about spending £5k on a night out, but I don't want to be surrounded by Z-listers.
by nicola baby, 16 Jul 2007Sorry to say J1, but me and 4 of my friends travelled to London and partied at Paper earlier this month, were on the guest list and got a table and about 5 rounds of drinks FOR FREE! We couldn't believe our luck. Upon leaving, the doormen got a cab for us. You are obviously not THAT well known! Great club, well worth the try.
by Aqualove, 03 Jul 2007What are you on about awhite87? You were on the guest list so you got a table and free drinks all night?! Firstly, everybody that goes in needs to be on the guest list (I'm not saying that it's difficult to get on the list, I'm just stating that you can't even go in if your name isn't down) so why would you get a free table and drinks when you need to book a table and pay a minimum spend of at least £500 to sit at one? I think someone is living in a fanstasy land.
Excellent club though, always have a good night out. Seem to be well known in there now and sometimes do get one or two free drinks but never a FREE TABLE!
Well, I thought it was a great venue. I found the staff to be really courteous and very pleasant. We were on the guest list, so got a table and complimentary drinks all night, which was impressive and reflected well on the classy management.
The only slight weakness was some of the music selections by the DJ. Overall the music was fine, but there were a couple of questionable records played which I, and I'm guessing a lot of other real clubbers, could have done without. But it's only a slight issue.
Give this up and coming venue a chance!
Extremely discourteous staff. Music mostly chart hits of '93. Club 18-30 clientele. Cramped VIP. Avoid.
by cdy (2 reviews), 31 Oct 2006Had a great night here. No trouble getting in as a friend had booked to eat. Good food, friendly crowd and the music was ok. There's plenty of space to sit and chat if that's your thing, or to party. Felt just right for a midweek night out, though I'm not sure I'd enjoy a Friday or Saturday, when it's probably a lot busier.
by rambler (4 reviews), 10 Apr 2006I booked a table almost a month ago at this new West End club for a birthday party. The doormen and staff are pretty friendly and helpful compared to other London clubs.
I read in other reviews that the club had spent a total of £750,000 on decoration which I highly doubt as the high ceilings and layout resembled a restaurant more than a club. The DJ could not be any worse. The majority of people were guys, 3:1 ratio. Prices are typical of any other London club.
Regardless, we did enjoy our time, which had more to do with the company rather than the club itself.
I believe the club tries too hard to become the next big thing and reach the status of other clubs like Tantra, Movida and Chinawhite. Seriously doubt it will happen unless they change their door policy to be more exclusive, and do something about the terrible DJ.
Have we missed a great club in London? Let us know.
