Green & Red reviews
Jonny Depp asked a key question in Once Upon a Time in Mexico: "Are you a Mexican or a Mexican't?"
I'm marrying a Mexican lady, who has just cooked me a very tasty chilaquiles. Perfect to mop up a hangover. She knows what Mexican food should look and taste like, home-made or otherwise. She's also big on good service. That's what I call Mexican.
Green and Red on the other hand clearly has no idea what Mexican food should look or taste like. I went there a few weeks ago with the lovely and a couple of friends, one of whom is also Mexican. The food was atrocious and the service appalling, with a half hour wait between courses - the place wasn't even busy! And I didn't enjoy the 'Montezuma's revenge' that swiflty followed.
Regrettably I also went there again last night, in a group of twenty lads as part of a stag do. At £40 per head (which, to be fair, included all our booze) all we were served was a few nibbles that were, frankly, crap. And, being a Saturday night, it was actually busy, so the wait between courses increased.
I find it irksome that a place professing to serve Mexican food can't even produce a basic salsa, or a decent guacamole, and the frijoles refritos (refried beans) appear to be out of a tin.
It's a shame, because it promises so much more: the bar downstairs with its screen playing subtitled black and white movies from the golden age of Mexican cinema, a comprehensive list of good tequilas, nice and friendly staff... It's a missed opportunity.
The only redeeming feature to the meal was the churros in chocolate sauce, but, on the tail of several beers and a £65 bottle of tequila (I think it was the cheapest one they had), not the best taste to end the night on. And too little too late.
All this unfortunately means that Green and Red is a proper Mexican't!
As per review below, margarita sucked. Not sure they have got the facilities in place to be serving food down there - food had been left to stand and bartender serving food and handling cash. Ate in the restaurant upstairs and the food was not bad. Poor service though.
by ceciliacruz, 02 Dec 2007The food was OK - and I know good Mexican, being from Southern California - but the atmosphere was pretty lame considering it was a Friday night! Also my group had a pitcher of margaritas that was like flavored water, so we asked for a stronger version for the next round. Ended up with a bill of £31 for the first pitcher and £57 for the second! And we were all still very much sober! Staff were unhelpful when we enquired about the steep prices too. I'm sure no one in my group will ever go back, and I for one wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
by nuclrwntr, 01 Sep 2007I hadn't had real Mexican food since being in Mexico, until I went to Green & Red. Absolutely marvellous. Best meal I've had in years. Great cocktails too. Thank god someone has opened this gaff so that Londoners can learn what real Mexican food is all about.
by Suze23, 29 Mar 2007Fantastic place. Do head downstairs and find out what real Tequila is like.
by Anonymous, 19 Dec 2006I just love this place-I only found it after it won bar of the year in evening standard, but apparently it's been around for quite a few months. Lovely food, great drinks and lots of pretty waitresses!
by discofizz, 01 Jun 2006I heard this place was the ultimate for the perfect Margarita and I wasn't disappointed. What they didn't tell me is the food's better than you get in Mexico - great ceviche! Would recommend to those looking for unpretentious food and atmosphere, gearing up to a night out with a plethora of kick-your-ass tequilas!
by westown girl, 14 Mar 2006Have we missed a great bar in London? Let us know.
