Moxon's reviews
One of the best fish shops in London, the other best one being Moxon's in South Kensington!

Friendly service but disappointed this time round with the quality of the oysters - half the batch were not fresh. A wasted journey.

I have to agree with 'FoodieDude'. While I now shop at the Lordship Lane branch in Dulwich, when I lived in Clapham South I always found the staff as friendly as you were to them. I always received good tips and they have a stack of fish recipe books to help you out, too.
As for prices, fish prices are influenced by the market and whatever's fashionable in London restaurants. Of course monkfish is epxensive - it's one of the most expensive fish you can buy anywhere in the UK right now. That said, if you know what you're doing with it, it'll still be cheaper than buying it at a restaurant.
If you want to spend less, why not buy a cheaper, sutstainable fish like mackerel (when in season), farmed Cornish bream (sea bass flavour at half the price), and pollock?
Always ask the fishmonger how long you can keep them in the fridge for or when it's best to eat by and they'll gladly help you out. At least, that's my experience both at the Nightingale Lane and Lordship Lane branches.

I can't understand the reviews that say the staff are unfriendly. What are they looking for - to be invited to dinner and drinks? I've always found the guys to be helpful, chatty and friendly. Sure, you can probably get cheaper fish elsewhere, but nothing that comes close to the quality at Moxon's. I don't know about you, but I don't like eating stale fish that's been on a supermarket counter for four days.

The fish from Moxon's smells appetising even before it's cooked and I'd recommend this place although you have to pay handsomely and they're a pretty unfriendly bunch!

Great quality fishmongers, but disappointed to see they're still selling skate and swordfish when both are endangered and have been for several years. They say on ther website: "We stock fish that has been ethically sourced", but this plainly isn't true. Please review your policy, Moxon's...

Simply: very fresh fish, a fair price, good service, friendly staff.

I agree with 'diva36'. Moxon's fish is good quality but staff aren't really that overly helpful; I also agree that the price you are quoted seems excessive after they clean/fillet it.
It's a real shame as I always look out for local shops and always recommend to friends the ones that deserve recognition, but with this one I feel like I'm being slightly conned.

Moxon's is definitely a place you are happy to discover close to where you live. Although a very small shop, the range is good, the fish incredibly fresh and the staff mostly helpful and informative (tend to be a little more helpful to attractive women). The monkfish tails and the fresh shellfish are superb.

I disagree with a lot of these gushing reviews. Every time I go in there, yes the fish is great quality, but the guys are unfriendly and not very helpful. I've asked for help and they seem to suggest anything without giving any reason and without offering up any cooking tips or suggestions. Furthermore, it is not cheap. I usually end up spending £15 on fish for two no matter what I seem to buy. I needed 500g monkfish the other day and he didn't feel the need to tell me that once filleted I took home only 250g. Needless to say, we weren't exactly full up after dinner.
Overall good quality but intimidating and poor service. I want to support local shops but these guys don't seem to care about the locals.

Moxon's now also have a shop in South Kensington, which is open till 7.30pm. Great for me as I can go there on my cycle home from Paddington. They have more prepared things too, which are great for impromptu dinner parties.

Our fishmonger has just closed down - we want Moxons to come to Herne Hill... please!

I disagree. Boutique butchers that look like grocers are ten a penny by comparison. If you're gonna compare stripes with spots - Dove is where it's at - no extras - just top quality meat. In Europe you still get butchers who specialise on the TYPE of meat. Likewise Moxons (Clapham) - focus on fresh fish with a few, relevant additional items and staff that know what they're talking about.

What on earth is all the fuss about? It's just a fishmongers (albeit a really really good one). And it's tiny. Moen's Butchers in Old Town is a zillion times better.. And I love fish over meat.

Superb - friendly, fresh, great assortment and often different fish you might want to test. Well done Moxon's!

I'd second the reviews below. Really super, fresh fish, and very well priced. If they don't have what you want (which is rare) they'll suggest a sensible alternative. Really good smoked haddock too. A local shop that is well worth supporting.

Moxons is simply the best thing about living in the area. Every neighbourhood should have a fishmonger's like this. They have a huge range of fantastic quality, super-fresh fish and they care about sustainability too. Service is friendly and knowledgeable, although not all of them can fillet a fish as well as the owner.

I was trying to find a good fishmongers in the Clapham area and somehow stumbled across this website. After reading all the reviews on this site, it has now become my regular fishmongers (I'm in there at least once a week).
The quality of the fish is excellent. It all comes from Billingsgate market, fresh that morning. (I should know, as I popped down there one Saturday and couldn't get hold of any mussels, then headed back up to Moxons and unsurprisingly they had bought the lot!) You can get pretty much any fish in there, including the not-so-common fresh sea trout (which is wonderful, by the way), fresh live or cooked lobster, dressed crabs, crevettes, the most wonderful mussels, and simply to-die-for mouthwatering scallops. Not only is there a fresh selection of fish and molluscs but also a fine array of olive oils and accompaniments, inculding Bomba paella rice (Moxon's I'm sure is the only place within a 5 mile radius that sells it). You can also pick up fresh vegetables and even stock from them, not to mention rather good recipes should you need inspiration.
For the size of their property and their (rather understated) location, these guys have cornered the market and are quite simply the best fishmongers in town. This place should be on one of those '50 things to do before you die' lists! Oh, and always make sure you grab a bag of fresh mussels (about £3 for enough for 2, which is cheaper than Sainsburys). C'est Magnifique!!

This really is an excellent shop. The brill I bought was amazing, and watching it being filleted was worth the money in itself. A proper fishmongers.
