With its promising menu and elegant decor, Le Café Anglais defies its less-than-salubrious surroundings (Whiteleys shopping centre in Queensway). Renowned chef, Rowley Leigh, is at the helm and he lives up to his reputation by creating a staggering array of mouthwatering dishes. There are hors d'oeuvres of Parmesan custard with anchovy toast or kipper pâté served with soft-boiled egg and Melba toast at £3 a pop, with mains of mallard with orange and red onion salad or beef consommés with oysters and shallots to follow. To end your meal there's a selection of British and French cheeses or a fine collection of sweet desserts.
