The Wallace Restaurant reviews
Likewise, can't see what the fuss is about. Greeting non-existant and service well-meant but messy. Another Peyton establishment that doesn't deliver.
by Simon Collins, 23 Oct 2007Maybe this place has improved dramatically since the last review? Spurred on by AA Gill's recent excellent review I went yesterday with a group of six others and the food was absolutely fantastic. We were spoilt for choice, but managed to cover most bases on the starters (fois gras, terrine, steak tartare, oysters, scallops) with excellent mains to follow. It's an amazing menu and given it's length I was impressed that the quality of the food was consistently excellent, with reasonably good service too.
Beautiful venue - reckon this place is an absolute winner for a long, lazy weekend lunch in a fine setting.
Went for lunch yesterday. Very nice setting, and that was about the only good thing!
They couldn't find our reservation and kept us standing at the door for a while, then it took about 15 minutes to get a glass of wine. The general atmosphere was pretentious French, with lots of staff standing around but not many serving. We ended up speaking to the waiter in French as his English was non-existant (it didn't extend to "3 glasses of wine please", which is pretty bad!). The 'tartine' was a piece of rock hard toast about 4 inches long with some (admittedly nice) crab topping and no garnish whatsoever. The ice cream was good, but can it really take so long to scoop ice cream? And then they added a 'discretionary' 12% tip to our bill which I didn't have time left to question (or the necessary French!)
For a light lunch at least, I would say avoid. I certainly won't go back!
Have we missed a great restaurant in London? Let us know.
