Devonshire House reviews
I also am glad I did read these reviews before going along. As a Chiswick local I have seen a few come and go but believe this one will stay without doubt. I had dinner here recently and had a great meal. I thought the staff worked hard and I thought the atmosphere was busy but warm. The food was top grade. I have now gone twice and each time the place is packed. Perhaps that fact can take something away for some people, but I personally like a busy restaurant. I hear they are opening the back area for summer and I for one will be heading there to enjoy the food and sunshine. Maybe that will relieve some of the booking issues. Tongue in cheek, I hope the grumblers stay away so the rest of us can get a seat and get on with enjoying the place!
by Max123, 16 Mar 2008We had to book a month in advance for a Saturday evening. The food was excellent and couldn't be faulted. However, the service was rubbish, it wasn't just one thing or one person, the staff had no knowledge of the menu (allowing us to order unnecessary side dishes), we could have died of thirst and when asked at the end of the evening if everything was ok (to which we said no), no apology was made! But the food was brilliant.
by Caro Fran, 10 Mar 2008What a disappointment! I have never had such a dreadful experience in a restaurant, and one which is owned by supposedly one of the top chefs in England. We were a party of eight and only one of the meals was of an acceptable standard. Poorly cooked, mediocrely prepared and dreadfully late dishes. I have chewed on pens that were more tender than the pieces of leathery pork and veal we were given.
by Joseba, 12 Feb 2008Couldn't even make a reservation - was put on hold for 15 mins. Can only imagine the service wouldn't be much better.
by ertyui, 08 Feb 2008We had a great meal at the Devonshire last week - I'm glad I didn't let some of these other reviews put me off. Cosy open fires, friendly and knowledgeable staff (when I asked if the Pinot Noir would be good with our meal, the manager actually talked us into having a cheaper bottle as it was a better match - when was the last time that has happened to you?). Goats cheese tart and devilled chicken livers were great starters (although I found the livers a little too spicy for my liking); the cock-a-leekie pie and roast venison could not be faulted in any way, nor could our melt-in-the-middle chocolate pudding. Mmmm!
by janisw, 29 Jan 2008This place is just cold, not cool. Staff could do with lessons in manners, especially the snotty manager who obviously has a dislike for customers and is in the wrong business. The most appropriate response to The Devonshire would best be given in language more familiar with Gordon Ramsay. Stick to the High Road.
by easygoing, 26 Dec 2007What a shame this pub has got a Gordon Ramsay name attached to it. A real let down. Food bland in general, but great potted shrimps and delicious botttle of Sicilian red. Overall rather overpriced, lacked atmosphere and very cheaply decorated. Gordon, stick to what you're good at.
by lovemyfood, 15 Dec 2007Overpriced, limited menu. Whilst the 'old' Devonshire had its problems, this is a much worse eating experience.
by easilypleased, 20 Oct 2007This place is poor: poor service, poor food, poor attention to detail. The only thing that isn't poor is the owners (who must be rolling in it). All the food is completely overpriced.
There are plenty of better places to eat just down the road on Chiswick High Road.
I went to Devonshire House and had a great time. The food is seasonal, with well-cooked interesting dishes which change daily. I started with kipper and whiskey pate (to die for), then had shepherd's pie with truffle mash (also fab). Service was on the ball. All in all, a great place for good food.
by lynn meyer, 27 Nov 2006Don't even bother if you are a vegetarian. I had pasta that I could have cooked better myself at home. Very bland!
by arkie, 30 Nov 2005One part of their website says they are open 7 days a week, on another part they say they are closed on Mondays - which they are, as I discovered trying to call them all day to make a booking. They could purchase an answer phone.
I've enjoyed lunches and evening drinks there but was surprised to have to teach a member of bar staff how to count out change.
Could do better!
Went there the other day, had some "bankers" in the corner which was fine if you like that sorta thing, but we were very firmly ejected from the premises at 11:05 having to finish our drinks quickly, and this wasn't a Sunday! Shame, the place could be very promising if it was managed properly.
by bubba, 06 Jul 2005I live next practically next door to this place and have have been a few times - food is very good, I think.
Only major problem, in my opinion, is that the staff are variable - some of them can be very snotty.
Very good food, nice and stylish decor. They are now taking bookings - great! Nice place to spend an evening if you want to talk to a person and actually hear what he/she is saying to you too. :)
by Anonymous, 04 Feb 2005Has got a lot of amazing reviews, but when I went last week I thought they were a little overrated. Simply lots of very trendy people, eating overpriced, smallish portions. Not dreadful, but many better places in the area to eat at.
by ElizaB (3 reviews), 28 Jan 2005Have we missed a great gastro pub in London? Let us know.
