The Victoria reviews
Went late October with friends who had been before. This time they hated it. Deeply disappointing.
Starters: scallops tasteless with flabby belly pork; pea puree like mashed, not smoothly pureed, probably tinned peas; black pudding (very small pud, lots of greenery) with a cold poached egg was unpleasant.
Mains: liver sent back - cut very thick, lukewarm; steak grey and almost cold; duck OK but nothing to write home about; red cabbage stone cold.
Wine list: short, with almost no French wines.
Will not be going there again.

I have eaten at The Victoria several times in the last 6 months, since I discovered it, and I have found the food to be excellent but a little pricey. I particularly liked the summer barbeque offer and am delighted that it is my local. The accomodation is daily basis and, in my opinion, too expensive. Looking forward to the Christmas menu.

By coincidence we ate here twice in a week. Firstly, let's start with the cooking. Going twice, with a total of 12 other people, one gets a really good look at the menu and the consistency. I am appalled that someone should compare this place to the Royal China. The cooking was on both occasions of a fantastically high standard. Last night I had the roasted cod and I have not had anything better in many years of eating in London restaurants. And the service was charming too. I think the gripes below are, frankly, out of date.

The service was extremely inadequate and the room was freezing. The food was monstrously overpriced and unpalatable. If anyone is seriously considering spending money at this atrocious excuse for a gastro-pub, then I strongly recommend you divert your interest to a branch of Strada or The Royal China restaurant in Putney. Both beat The Victoria hands down.

Does anonymous (7 Jul 05) want to keep it to himself? Apart from agreeing prices are more gastro than pub I don't recognise any of these comments. The Victoria is chilled, and long may it thrive.

Good service, very nice food but quite expensive. Staff were polite and helpful.

Shocking service, over priced food, and staff stuck up their own arse!! Never going back even though I have just moved into the area and the pub is unfortunately my new local.

Have we missed a great gastro pub in London? Let us know.
