Mathew Alexander reviews
If you want fabulous hair and to know that you are going to be properly looked after, then Mathew Alexander is your man. Not only does he do a fantastic haircut but he is a creative genius. Lorraine is an amazing colourist too. Just go and try for yourselves!
by carynk, 04 May 2008I have very long (waist length) hair and was very nervous about my visit, but I was put at ease straight away. The salon is very intimate and is so cosy and welcoming. The receptionist was very nice. I was taken downstairs for a full-head colour treatment with Lorraine, who was fantastic. She spent two hours colouring my hair and was very patient and professional. I was then taken upstairs for a cut and blow-dry with Mathew. He came downstairs to meet me and made me a coffee and then he came down a while later to check on how my colouring was going. Mathew made me feel great and listened to me when I said that I wanted to keep my long hair. A great guy and a lovely salon. Very professional, personal service. Would definitely go back.
by Raven, 30 Apr 2008Fantastic salon - clean, chic and comfortable - and excellent customer service. The staff here are very professional. Lorraine is excellent with colour and managed to fix my previously ruined (by another hairdresser) hightlights. Highly recommended.
by ntay9283 (2 reviews), 21 Apr 2008What a fabulous experience! Lovely colour, followed by superb cut by Luke (he's gorgeous too!). My blow dry lasted days - didn't want to wash it out. Xena was welcoming, Mathew said 'Hi', lovely head massage... everyone was great. Have never spent this much before on my hair, but it was worth it and I will be back.
by lovestyle, 18 Apr 2008Following the reviews here, I went there as a new customer yesterday, wanting a major change. I've got curly, long hair, and I'd been languishing in a terribly unflattering style. I wanted a shorter, versatile do. I had a few ideas, but just wanted to be listened to and to trust the hairdresser to use his expertise to come up with something flattering which suited my lifestyle.
I loved the salon from the moment I went into it. I'm quite shy and clueless about hairdressing, but all the staff were warm, and I felt welcomed and respected. I had an appointment with Mathew. He is so intuitive - he got what I was hoping for immediately. I felt I was in safe hands, and he worked wonders. I feel so much more confident, and I loved the pampering scents and head massage!
I'd never spent so much on a haircut and I was so worried about wasting money, and doing something adventurous. I was reassured on all counts. I now love my new haircut, and I've got tailored products which I know how to use. This place is a cosy, friendly oasis and so worth every penny!
I live in the Midlands and visited the salon last week as a treat. As Mathew was away, I was booked in with Luke. I was so pleased with the whole experience. The staff were lovely - very attentive, very honest and very patient with all my questions. Luke is wonderful. He gave me an honest opinion of what would and wouldn't work with my fine and straight hair and cut it in a style that I am so pleased with. He isn't at all 'scissor happy' and it was worth the 180 mile round trip, even if it was only for a trim! My hair felt fantastic. I wouldn't hesitate to go back.
by ClaireDexter (2 reviews), 05 Apr 2008I would just like to say that I'm so happy that salons like this exist. I live in Austria, so getting people to send me out gift vouchers is a bit of a pain, but when I called Mathew Alexander and spoke to Xena she couldn't be more accommodating. This shocked me, as I'm not usually used to people in hair salons that are willing to go that extra mile to give a fabulous service, so this was a very pleasant surprise. I was a bit of a nuisance because I'd never heard of the salon before so had plenty of questions to ask, but Xena was very patient and gave me plenty of information - she couldn't do enough for me, basically. My daughter hasn't used her voucher yet, but I'm already won over by the delightful Xena. I didn't think service like that still existed... very refreshing!
by missmoneypenny£$$, 31 Mar 2008A delicious and intimate salon with impeccable staff. I was so happy to stumble upon this gorgeous oasis in Mayfair. Luke and Lorraine were fabulous. This is by far the BEST haircut and colour I have ever had - the experience was wonderful. Thank you!
by happyclient, 28 Mar 2008What a beautiful salon and a tremendous team! Tucked away in a stunning part of Mayfair, where total pampering is provided. I had a wonderful haircut with Luke and colour from Lorraine (and for such a fussy client, believe me, this means lots). I am normally a salon 'floater', but I think I may have found my hair's spiritual home! Recommend to anyone.
by addictedtolookinggood, 24 Mar 2008I am very fussy when it comes to hairdressers but I can only sing Mathew and Lorraine's praises - he is excellent at cutting hair and she is a brilliant colourist. And all the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I have read the negative reviews and all I can say is that they do not reflect my experience, which has been consistently good.
by Alessandra, 04 Mar 2008For the first time in my life I've walked out of the hairdressers and I haven't gone home and washed my hair. My boyfriend actually noticed and complimented me. It looks great a month later and I don't need to wear it in a ponytail any more. Mathew is brilliant!
by FayeAmber, 12 Jan 2008I was really looking forward to my visit to this salon, as the reviews were all so good. However, I was really disappointed when, due to the fact that their only technician is constantly off sick, mine and a friend's appointments had to be cancelled twice during the past 5 weeks. It's such a shame. The only reason I'm leaving a 3 star review is because their receptionist was extremely polite and apologetic, which made me feel at ease rather than angry. Maybe I'll give them another try some day.
by trixystix, 04 Jan 2008I loved these guys. I had such a cough and cold that day that I was amazed to get anything out of it at all. But extra water was given to me and tea, and all the staff looked after me. I booked a special deal but left a nice tip just for that reason. Maybe the make-up was a little too much for me on the eyes, but it made such a change to go to a salon like this. Although the hours of opening - and who can blame people for having a life? - mean that I can only return when I have time in the day or am going to a party.
by fletcher_sk, 29 Dec 2007I was sent to Mathew upon a recommendation from a friend. She has been going to him for years and promised me that he would give me a fantastic haircut. I have extremely curly hair that sometimes has a mind of its own. So, it was with some trepidation that I entered his rather swish salon. Luckily, I was immediately made to feel at ease. Everyone from Mathew to his juniors made a fuss of me and made me feel special. The haircut is great - even my clueless boyfriend commented on how good my hair looked. All in all, a fabulous experience. I'll definitely be going again.
by beakyjane, 29 Dec 2007There are so many hairdressers about with chequered histories. I've tried lots, from my local salon to high street names to couture hairdressers. My experience at Mathew Alexander has always been consistent, friendly and spot-on.
I'm in my late 30s and I always worry that I'll end up leaving with a style that will make me look even older. My fine yet wavy hair isn't the easiest to deal with, so on-trend looks are not necessarily going to work. I feel that Mathew and Lorraine both understand where I'm coming from whenever I visit. My root tint is always excellently applied; I tried the Biolustre, which Lorraine suggested to give the appearance of thicker hair, and thoroughly recommend it (especially if your hair is fine and over-processed); my cut and blow-dry is always of a high standard. Mathew also did my make-up on my birthday and I felt great... dare I say it, about five years younger!
I understand that Mathew can't please everyone, no hair stylist can, nor a doctor or a butcher or anyone else. What I find refreshing is Mathew's honesty, sensitivity and personality. It is so nice for a change to get that personal service and not be just a number or a another client. Building a relationship with any hairdresser is key to finding a perfect style, as I have found. Mathew is in touch and 'one to one' with his clients. It is unrealistic to expect magical solutions, but believe me, Mathew will try.
The salon is so delicious and beautiful, it is a treat just to be there. I loved what he did to my hair and I also received some great make-up tips that really work. The guy is a genius. And he is so funny too. I feel great, confident and sexy after seeing him. A welcome breath of fresh air when it comes to hairdressers, he is every girl's best friend!
I visited Mathew's salon after reading the fantastic reviews on urpan path. I was worried I would walk into a snobby salon, be made to wait ages and end up with a hairstyle I didn't want. However, his salon is a breath of fresh air. Everyone was friendly, the colourist (Lorraine) was great, and Mathew spent ages going through the sort of cut I would like. I wanted to go shorter but was a bit nervous. He cut my mid-length hair in stages, checking with me on how much shorter I would like and what he thought would suit me.
The result was a great haircut, brilliant colour, and 7 weeks on I am still getting compliments! It is nice to visit a hairdresser who understands how a good hair cut can make you feel and spends the time, along with his team, to make you leave the salon feeling confident and happy. It is definitely the best haircut I have had and I will be going back.
I feel a bit like the bad fairy here, saying negative things about someone who is adored by so many, but my experience was not brilliant. I have difficult hair and am used to high street salons balking the moment I tell them what I like, but I didn't expect it to happen here, nor with so much attitude. I was barely through the door before I was told my hair was a mess, my idea of growing it was mad and that I should be booked in for a Biolustre treatment not the highlights and blow dry I wanted. I felt very small and patronized by Mathew, frankly. His colourist was kind and lovely but is clearly competing with a strong personality.
I was persuaded to spend a fortune and I am embarrassed to say it has made not one iota of difference. It is perhaps telling that when I told a doctor specializing in hair loss/fine hair at St Thomas's of my Biolustre experience, he replied I had been ripped off by someone making a lot of money from insecurity. My hair looks amazing a few months after my horrid experience with the precious and self-absorbed Mathew Alexander, thanks to trained and honest professionals who understand vulnerability and are sufficiently professional to listen to rather than judge and dismiss their clients.
Had my hair cut by Mathew on Saturday and it's the best it's ever been. Such a nice guy and a great team.
by queenie01, 10 Dec 2007I think all of these comments are written by the salon, as I went there last week and had the worst haircut ever. I'm feeling really low, as I look the worst I have done for a very long time. Mathew had no expertise and he didn't have a clue what would look good on me. I feel very let down.
by julianne, 05 Dec 2007Have we missed a great hair salon in London? Let us know.
