Taylor Taylor... toss a coin to see if you will have a good haircut experience or not. I used to see Jonny. Not your archetypal hairdresser. I know more about his photographic exploits and relationships than he knew about what I wanted. Very likeable, but I always had to go home and rewash and 'sort out' my hair when he had done it. A true artist that one, looked like a modern day wizard. I was very fond of him and his eccentricities. I loved that he greeted his clients by patting them on the head, for example. Interesting.
So, I am going to see a different chap at the weekend, as Jonny has mysteriously left (with the resident King Charles spaniels and the whole cocktail bar under his cape, if he has any sense)... I will update when I get my new do.
Oh, and let's pray the fierce blonde spikey dykey rough hairwasher girl isn't around. I nearly needed cranial osteopathy after her attempts to wash my hair last time. One scary girl!!
I went to Taylor Taylor last Friday and had an amazing haircut and blow dry from Ricky. He listened to what I wanted, talked me through what he was doing, and I walked out feeling amazing. I've been to lots of 'trendy' hairdessers in London but Taylor Taylor is by far the most friendly and, at £49 for a superb haircut, very reasonable. (I also had an amazing G&T). I would recommend Ricky and Talyor Taylor to anyone who wants a fabulous haircut at a lovely, funky salon.
by Lucyrfg, 11 Apr 2008I've been to Taylor Taylor twice. The first time I had my blonde hair coloured brown by Maria, who did such an amazing job that now, 5 months later, the colour is still perfectly matching - almost blending with my natural colour, and I don't have to do anything about it.
So I went there again, this time for a cut, and the guy - Johnny - who cut my hair was more of a talker than a top stylist. I got a very mediocre cut for £70. When he blow-dried it, it simply looked dreadful. But he just kept on talking, meanwhile literally stopping what he was doing, despite the fact that his other client was already waiting for her scheduled appointment. Good job they kept on giving me some wine otherwise I would have gone mad! At least I amused my friend, who told me that I looked like I just ran through a bush. Not a great compliment. Not a great service.
I went to Taylor Taylor for the first time this week and had my eyebrows plucked and tinted and a Decleor tan. It was the most amazing experience I've had in a long time. I have been to the Elemis Spa regularly and other very nice exclusive salons around the world, but Shimol and Charlen were the most attentive and professional beauticians I've met. Both of them took a real interest in getting the best result and creating the shape and colour I was after and were not arrogant like many others to insist they know best what I need. They both worked hard to make my time a real treat and were extremely polite and likable. I am looking forward to going back again and will recommend all my friends to go there. Well done, ladies! (Also special thanks to the blonde short-haired lady behind the bar who mixed the amazing mango fruit cocktail, and to James, Bradley's partner, who looked after each customer to make sure everything was well.)
by LidiaSchechter, 13 Mar 2008In one week I treated myself to a haircut (amazing as normal, no point in even commenting any more on it) as well as a back massage, which I booked after my haircut.
I didn't know they did massage treatments, but in the basement there's the most incredible room that's set for all type of therapy, with a huge shower, therapy couch etc. It's really dark and feels a bit like being in the most calm place in the universe (without any faux running water tricks).
I got a full back massage from Charlene and it was awesome. I've been around the world and always try to get a massage when I'm on holiday. This was one of the best I've ever had. She sensed where my back needed attention and knew how to apply the perfect degree of force. It was so good, I could've sworn there were at least 3 pairs of hands - she assures me it was just her! The best respite from East london possible. Do it.
I went to Taylor Taylor for the first time recently and am so pleased with the result. My stylist did just what I wanted. Everyone has commented on how good my hair looks. This will be my hairdressers for the future. Highly recommend.
by lesley204, 29 Feb 2008I've been to many hair salons but my time at Taylor Taylor has been the best. The place looks amazing! As soon as I walked in the first time, I was met by one of their juniors. He was friendly, helpful and funny - which is a change from most salons, where juniors are usually very young and just seem to stand in the corner and say nothing. He offered me lots of drinks and really made me feel at home.
My stylist turned out to be just as friendly as the rest of the people in the salon, and gave me the best haircut I've ever had. The only thing I didn't like in the salon was the bird cage, which I thought was a bit strange and maybe not the best place for birds. Apart from that, Taylor Taylor was great and really different from other 'white box' salons.
I have been a client here for a while now and I love it! I have Hanna to colour and Ricky to cut. They really are a brilliant pair of hairdressers. I'd never go anywhere else.
by Sarah m, 06 Feb 2008I found it a bit shocking that other reviewers had a bad experience here. I also have been to both salons and think the guys in the smaller salon are all great. I see Nico, the French guy, for highlights and cuts. First time I saw him we had a 30 minute chat about what I wanted, which was fab, and he sure did deliver! Great place. Gets a little busy, but I wouldn't want to go to a hairdresser with no customers. On my hols in Mexico now, with brilliant manageable hair.
by siouxieban, 03 Feb 2008I went to their smaller salon just off Brick Lane, and was really disappointed. The salon was really tatty and cramped, like being in box. The hairdresser was friendly enough to start off with, but that all changed when I left the salon - more of that later...
The cut was not good. It looked like a short version of my 'going-to-the-supermarket' hair. Really unimpressed.
Now for the worst bit. I left the salon and turned the wrong way; realising my mistake, I turned back, so had to walk back past the salon. The door of the salon was open, and inside I could hear, and see, my hairdresser doing really nasty impressions of me, and all the other stylists laughing. I felt really bad about myself... and to top it off I had a bad hair do!
Don't go there. REALLY, DON'T.
I just had the most wonderful hair straightening experience with Shinobu at Taylor Taylor on Cheshire Street. I had a bad experience with the straightening elsewhere a few months ago, and Shinobu worked with me to customize the Japanese ionic process to my exact needs and hair type, even though she'd never really done that before. I am absolutely thrilled with the results and feel confident about my looks in a way I haven't since last August, before the bad straightening. Highly recommend Shinobu for hair straightening!
by leavitka, 18 Jan 2008Very overrated place. I felt like a sausage in a factory. Not worth the money and I wouldn't go back again. My last cut was a disaster - the stylist put layers in even though I have fine hair and I came away £££s lighter and disappointed.
by jenpop1, 13 Jan 2008Travelled all the way from Northampton. Waited ages in reception (over 1/2 hour). Cut was dreadful. I had a shoulder-length bob that needed a trim. I ended up with a pudding-basin cut and chopped-about ends that makes me look like a reject from a Victorian prison! It's going to take at least 4-6 months to grow out. Emailed them after I got home and washed it but didn't even get the courtesy of a response. Don't waste your time.
by skatergirl, 10 Jan 2008Apart from the very cool girly decor of the salon and the great cocktails, there is not much to TT. Tried them several times and each time it was disappointing - dramas ranging from very crap blow dry to stylist turning up 45 minutes late for my appointment. It is overrated. The quality of the stylists is just not great. They seem to be more interested in telling you about their second life as stylists during the London fashion week than in their clients.
by chicochica, 01 Dec 2007I thought the salon was really unique and I loved the cocktails at the bar! But most of all I loved my colour - the technician, Hannah, is the quickest at highlighting and the best colourist I have had there.
by nataliejh, 20 Nov 2007I've never done one of these reviews before, but after reading the last one I feel compelled to because it sounds like a different salon. I HATED hairdressers after being butchered at a provincial Toni & Guy many years ago, so am delighted to have finally found my hairdressing spritual home - Taylor Taylor!
I was so nervous that I requested a green tea to calm me, but the staff were all so friendly and lovely that before I knew it I was sipping some sort of pinky-orange champagne cocktail! OK, the salon was pretty manic but it's all part of the buzz.
A really sweet Aussie girl did a really cool gingery colour with a few darker chunks (I'm sure that's not the technical term!) and a hilarious guy with huge curly hair did the cut. I was so relieved that he didn't try any wanky East London-ness on me and just gave me a really nice, modern, good cut. I really would recommend Taylor Taylor to anyone.
P.S. The text message reminders are pure genius!
I have been a client at Taylor Taylor for 3 years now and am so glad they have re-opened the original Cheshire Street salon. The atmosphere is more relaxed there than at the Commercial Street salon - really friendly and intimate and a great street for after-haircut shopping.
by goodhaircut1, 14 Nov 2007What an awful place! This salon is seemingly run (if you can call it that) by kids. I went for a colour and cut. My colourist seemed too busy and preoccupied with the several other clients she had on the go. Threw some colour on and left me there seated for what I thought was rather too long at the time.
As she had disappeared off the face of the earth, I started to worry. I asked a nearby assistant to go and find her and ask whether the colour should be washed off. He said yes. Then came back and proceeded to wash the hair of the lady next to me. It transpires that the guy does not speak or understand English. He washed the wrong person's colour off, despite me panicking and asking for his help (he didn't help).
I then got up and walked out of the downstairs dungeon they call a salon, in an effort to find someone who understood English, and who would take the colour off my hair. Needless to say, by the time I got this done I was peroxide blonde. Seeing as I went in for a natural look, I was not too happy. I then got it cut, by a girl who looked like she would rather not be there but who hung around for a tip and turned on her heels once getting it.
What an absolute nightmare. Give them their due, after my complaining, and my insistence they put it right (wasn't their suggestion), I got the colour toned down and a refund for the colour only. My hair is still ruined to this day!
Yes the decor is fab, but the haircuts are impossible to maintain, and they didn't really listen to what I wanted. I came out with a slightly assymetric haircut which doesn't suit my face at all!
by VeronicaSE22 (3 reviews), 05 Oct 2007I am visiting the UK from Australia with a friend. Please open a Taylor Taylor in Sydney! I had the best hair cut and set of highlights I have ever had and everything was relaxed, cool but gorgeous. Even the blow dry was superb.
by susanaust, 05 Oct 2007Have we missed a great hair salon in London? Let us know.
