Notting Grill reviews

We went here on a Saturday evening in June 2007 not knowing what to expect. Our dinner turned out to be an absolute delight.

The service was OK but nothing special (which one might have expected considering the price level). The food, however, was outstanding. For mains my partner ordered fish (Barramundi) and I decided to try a steak with green pepper sauce. Both came perfectly cooked and were very tasty. The vegetable side orders and the desserts were also very good.

All in all, it's not the best place in town but I would definitely go back for a nice dinner.

The first time I went here my dad had bigged it up so much I was really looking forward to a good meal in a nice atmosphere. I have now been quite a few times but each time, to my mind, it's been disappointing. The menu is unimaginative, the food is dull and poor quality, the staff aren't very friendly, and it's highly overpriced. The only reason I would recommend going here is because the owner is a celebrity TV chef... but that's only if you like him, and I don't!

People eating before us apologised for keeping the table longer than expected, making us feel we had rushed them out. We hadn't!

Once we sat down, service was very slow. We ordered vegetables with our meal and had to remind staff twice that we hadn't received them. Food was poor quality - chips tasted re-fried and were returned.

Lastly, toilets (unisex) were dirty, with towels all over the floor both inside and outside cubicles.

Whilst the airy gastropub has a pleasant decor, the service was very amateur (i.e. poor English skills combined with a total lack of food knowledge).

All could be forgiven if the food was up to scratch. However, this is where the NG really falls short. I was not expecting fine cuisine, just basic food executed well. For £30 I expected my steak to be memorable; instead it was decidedly average at best, with an unusual 'aged' taste. There appeared to be no discernible difference between how my med/rare steak was cooked in comparison to my dining companions (rare and med/well) - all came rare with sinew throughout. Other lowlights included stale bread, very very bland gluggy mash, over-boiled veg and tasteless run-of-the-mill desserts.

For £240 for a table or 4 there are numerous better options where the basics are done right and then some.

I had dinner with a great friend of mine from New York earlier in the year, we both found the service and food appalling. I sent two emails to AWT but to absolutely no avail. Why one would bother going there beats me. Maybe he should spend a little time in his restaurants and less time self promoting on the TV.
