Mayfair (Main Branch), HolbornThe Gaucho Grill reviews
I visited The Gaucho Grill after reading that it's considered to be one of the best grills in London. Unfortunately, I can't concur with the rave reviews.
I am no stranger to good food, steaks, and wines. However, when I saw the selection on the wine list I stopped and stared in amazement at the prices the restaurant was charging. Forgive me if I seem cheap, but how can you justify charging £185 for a bottle of wine? The majority of the selection was in the £80 - £150 range, with perhaps one or two at the cheapest price of £35. This is about 10 times the actual value of a bottle of wine. So, this constituted the first and biggest disappointment.
Now for the food... I ordered two ribeye steaks, medium cooked, with some side orders. When the food came to the table, all I saw was a big thick chunk of meat on the plate, and nothing else - no salad, nothing. The meat was oozing blood. We had to try and cut into the meat with regular butter knives, as no actual steak knives were provided. After a couple of bites, I called the waiter and had him take the food away and re-cook it. However, when he returned with the steaks they had been flame grilled to seal the meat but were still bloody when cut open. Disgusted, I wanted to leave but had to sit there for well over 30 minutes after the plates were removed, waiting for the bill and some service.
I hope others have better experiences and larger wallets, when dealing with this restaurant. Very poor indeed.
Steaks are pretty good here and service is friendly and capable. The interior has a cosy feel to it - grab a window seat to get views of the Thames.
