The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of European paintings in the world. With its permanent collection numbering over 2,000 works from virtually every school of art, plus additional exhibitions, it's unlikely that you'll get to see everything in one visit. Admission is free though, and you can always opt for a guided tour of the major masterpieces or utilise one of the excellent audio guides.
