A stone's throw from the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery has a more accessible feel due in part to its more manageable size. Nevertheless, it still manages to house the most comprehensive collection of its kind in the world. Founded in 1856 to collect the likenesses of famous British men and women, subjects of the portraits hanging here range from Tudor monarchs to present-day cultural icons.
