Today is Boring reviews
Not very knowledgeable staff! Very slow and the staff's faces make me upset! Not the best selection of DVDs. Their popcorn is disgusting.
by Lauren15 (2 reviews), 07 Apr 2008Today is Boring has been a lifesaver for me since they opened in 2002. Their DVDs are the only escape from the now overpopulated party central that is Shoreditch. I don't see how they are 'ridiculous'. It's just a DVD rental shop after all. Although, it does look more like a cosy retro living room than a typical video shop. It certainly beats Blockbuster and the big corporate chains. It's original and independent and the owners are helpful and friendly. I suppose anything located in Shoreditch gets immediately hated on.

by Anonymous, 18 Nov 2006Totally original and amazing! Love their film events. Especially the annual Twin Peaks Marathon. Recently attended a John Waters' Cry Baby screening where a Rockabilly band played afterwards. Everyone was dressed up 50's style and dancing on the tables! Not your regular boring stuffy video shop!
by elephant man, 20 Dec 2005Painfully hip and more than slightly ridiculous. I don't know what they have behind the counter, but they seem to spend an eternity staring at the computer screen after you give them your card (...are they stoned or simply illiterate one wonders?) Having said that, I'll still go back as it's convenient and the film nights look worth a go if only to justify the £10 joining fee!
by Anonymous, 22 Nov 2005Great store, we joined up last night. The selections they have on the wall are really off the wall (sigh) and interesting and probably will encourage me to watch some weirder shit. The staff were extremely helpful and I don't think a £10 joining fee is that extortionate for a video store with a total different angle that stocks stuff Blockbuster or equivalent would never stock.
It's also about 20 yards from my place, how can you go wrong.
I would like to refer to one of the guys here saying he saw someone being fined after 3 minutes. I've been late more then once and have never been fined. I think instead of 3 minutes it might more likely have been 3 days. And you should have not only checked the shelves, cos they have a lot more movies in the folders. But pobably you were so busy watching the person being fined that you just missed it.
The staff as well are really friendly and helpful, they give great tips and I have never ever asked about a movie or director they didn't know.
Really, the best place I've ever been to and I will continue getting my movies there.
Very highly recommended!!
This store is small and cosy with great decor. I love the trippy floor! Don't be fooled by the one shelf area of DVDs as I was, because there are hundreds more if you just look through their catalogues. Very un-Hollywood... nice!
by Anonymous, 07 Jul 2005I was very disappointed. The person who answered the phone didn't know who Kiarostami was and then, when she looked him up, told me they only only have Ten. A Blockbuster would have a better choice of works from a director who is considered one of the best in the world.
by Anonymous, 23 Jun 2005They charge a membership fee of £10 which takes the piss. There was very little on the shelves that I haven't already seen and far too much kitschy schlock stock for my taste.
When I was in there I saw someone being fined for a DVD being like 3 minutes late or something which struck me as mean and petty and ultimately bad business practice.
The film shop on Broadway Market is infinitely better; a far wider, less predictable choice of well chosen films than Today is Boring, cheaper rates, no membership fee and really nice people.
They are good. I saw 'Danger Diabolik' at one of their film nights and it was one of the best cinema trips I've had in a long time.
Even the turkeys I've rented there have been at least interesting if nothing else. Join them now!
Trouble is, if you live in the area you end up watching too much arthouse and get the reciprocal craving for Hollywood.
by Anonymous, 22 Sep 2004Such a great idea. I just hope they make enough money to expand, as I can't cross London every time I want to hire a decent film. You have to pay £10 to join, and then about £3 per dvd (i think), but it's worth it just to escape the endless rows of hollywood movies offered by the larger chains.
I spent 20 minutes flicking through the catalogues making mental notes of all the films I need to hire as there's just so much good stuff here - you can tell they care about film. They also organise nights in local bars such as the recent Twin Peaks nights where they showed the whole series.
Have we missed a great video / dvd rental shop in London? Let us know.
