Redstar (Bar)
09 October 2005
Great feel: lo-key, relaxed pub, good mix of students, richer post-student types and locals. Beats the sister pub the Dogstar hands down, though the music has shifted a little from the almost perfect hip-hop/funk stuff they used to do regularly...
Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Diner)

Great burger bar - excellent choice, good chips, fantastic staff. Chocolate milkshakes are a little too artificial, and prices a little too high, but the burgers are REALLY good. Especially the blue cheese one (not too strong, but very perky!). Worth getting chips too - filling, but they do them really well here.
M Moen & Sons (Butcher / Organic Food Shop)

Cannot fault these guys. It's a butchers that doesn't smell bad! They do great food - are extremely knowledgeable, and happy to give suggestions that actually work for complex meals.
On Saturdays they do a roast sandwich thing outside which is also pretty good, and their cheese and olive bars are much better than local alternatives.
I think they're RSPCA accredited too, so loads of free range and organic produce. Don't want to shop anywhere else for meat now!
Sea Cow (Fish and Chips Shop / Fishmongers)

Other than the Friar's Delight off Grays Inn Road somewhere, this is the best fish & chip place in London! Fantastic chips, not overly pricey, great fish - REALLY good service too.
Really recommend the scallops - you get loads for the cost, and they're pretty fine!
Bread & Roses (Pub)

Great service, good food, fantastic venue. Maybe not so socialist feeling as it's roots imply, but an all round good pub. Food used to be hit & miss on Sundays, but massively improved now. Is getting better and better...
Alba Pizzeria (Pizza Restaurant)
16 August 2005
Other than Eco, this is one of the best pizza places in London - indeed, outside Rome.
It used to be cheap and cheerful - I even remember being able to bring your own wine!
But now it's gone through a refurb, and looks all the better for it. The food is on great form - with a margherita pizza that is near perfect for crispiness, sauce and size - and the service has improved exponentially.
The new layout works really well too - the charm of the open-air front has been strengthened not lost.
Prices remain good value, and the location is far too convenient, literally opposite the tube.
Really highly recommended!
Eco Pizza (Pizza Restaurant)

One of the best pizza places in London. The calzone at Eco is fantastic, service is ruthlessly efficient, and attention to detail on salads, desserts and other non-mains pretty fine.
But - Eco really stands out for its core food. For example, the margherita pizzas are world class - and, with the exception of Alba up the road, I haven't had one as good since being in Rome.
I really recommend this place - still going strong, still making fine pizza, still great value.
