Detroit (Bar)
14 May 2005

I wasn't hopeful based on my friend's description of Detroit as a 'chilled out, cave-like basement bar' but it was better than I expected. Very cosy underground vibe, fairly good cocktails, good music and a friendly crowd.

I liked it enough to recommend it for my little sister's birthday party, which went down really well!

Tate Modern Tate Modern (Public Art Gallery / Tourist Attraction)
14 May 2005

So easy to become jaded when you have something like the Tate Modern on your doorstep. But most other cities aspiring to London's status would give anything for a public modern art gallery on this scale.

I must admit that some of my occasional visits have left me underwhelmed, but I imagine most Londoners would agree that it's had a great first 5 years and has substantially helped re-invent this area of the south bank of the Thames.

I take friends visiting from abroad here and their reactions invariably remind me that despite its flaws, it's an amazing gallery.

Green Park Green Park (Park)
14 May 2005

Green Park gets overlooked in comparison to some of London's other parks as it sits between St. James's Park and Hyde Park, but it's a wonderful space just off Piccadilly with plenty of space to enjoy and great views and monuments.

Lovely place for a chilled picnic with friends and they hire out cheap deck chairs too, for that authentic English summertime experience.

Selfridges Selfridges (Department Store / Lingerie Shop / General Sports Shop / Food Hall)
14 May 2005

Each time I go here I'm just amazed by how good Selfridges is. I worked in retail design for several years and I walk around it thinking 'why did I never think of that?'

They currently have allowed an online gambling (poker) website to essentially sponsor the entire store. Sounds like a horribly tacky idea, but it's executed so well that I actually considered engaging in the demos and learning how to play poker when I was last there.

It's one of the best shops in the world - London doesn't know how lucky it is.

Really lovely shop with fabulous products. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful; the harsh comments below don't tally with my experience at all.

Good food (albeit slightly expensive for what it is) and a great place to meet people when visiting the area or after an afternoon in the park.

Trader Vic's Trader Vic's (Bar)

Hmm... I'd happily drink here if I were staying in the hotel, but otherwise it's not the best that London has to offer by a long shot. Staff are friendly but it feels a bit dated and the crowds have long since moved on.

Gorgeous modern hotel located conveniently close to both Mayfair and Knightsbridge. They treat guests well and the rooms are simple, attractive and comfortable. There's also a super Thai restaurant (Nahm) which is one of the best in London.

Much the same as the other shops but handy for Sloane Street shopping, directly opposite Anya Hindmarch and a few doors from Liza Bruce, so I love shopping around here.

The staff are friendly and will happily call around the other shops if they are missing something in your size.

Le Gavroche Le Gavroche (Restaurant / Restaurant)
24 April 2005

One of my favourite restaurants in London without a doubt. The food is always virtually impossible to fault - beautifully prepared and presented and I always find several things on the menu that have me almost drooling in anticipation. I'm never disappointed when they arrive.

The decor is attractive in a grown-up way, but unlike many restaurants it's purely a backdrop. They're not trying to impress you with their taste in interior decoration or make you feel that you are at the cutting edge of something - they just cook amazing food.

Out of this world Indian cuisine. If you haven't eaten somewhere like this (and there are very few Indian restaurants at this level) you should try it to discover how delicious and beautifully presented Indian food can be.

The service and design are great and I can't wait to go back here.

Wonderful interior decor, faultless service and superb food. The main menu is rather pricey and when you take into account the cost of wine the whole experience can be breathtakingly expensive. However, they do a good value set lunch which I'd recommend if you want to eat here without breaking the bank.

Immensely impressive food in a pleasant environment. Service was hard to fault and every course was practically perfect. It wasn't cheap but I'd highly recommend it to anybody.

Super food, friendly service and a nice atmosphere. Cocktails in the bar are also very well made.

Popped in here for a well deserved break from shopping in Mayfair. Haven't eaten here in the evening but in the afternoon it was the perfect cosmopolitan cafe - interesting people, light and delicious dishes (for me) and an apparently excellent burger (for my friend) and the design is impressive too.

I'll be returning to check it out for dinner soon.

One of the few places I'm happy to eat in Westminster, although its location means it's frequently full of MPs which doesn't do much for me. Fantastic dishes with wonderful presentation - I took some visiting relations here and it changed their outlook on what Indian food can be.

Nice bar too...

Good choice for a large group of friends or colleagues - we had a round table which encouraged sharing and we enjoyed out meal very much. It was a bit on the busy side and service occasionally suffered, but we might just have been unlucky on our visit. There's a great bar downstairs as well, but it's not easy to get into - members only, I think.

Sketch Gallery Sketch Gallery (Restaurant)

Unconventional design, like the rest of Sketch, and I personally found the dining area a little too large for my tastes. But the food was much better than I expected - well presented and delicious. The "friends bar" at the side of the restaurant was also very charming and cosy.

Couldn't find much to fault here - the service, food, atmosphere and design were fantastic. It's one of my favourite restaurants in London - highly recommended!
