Feels a bit like a hotel bar and is very noisy, but generally seems popular with the Victoria-based drinkers (i.e. not the trendiest of bars ;-)

Long Bar at Sanderson Long Bar at Sanderson (Bar)
17 March 2004

Usually very full, so get there early if you don't want to be crushed against the huge central bar, or better still reserve a table out in the open atrium. White room, with floaty white curtains at the windows and quirky bar stools with eyes painted on their backs. it's quite a posey place, and a bit up itself. But there's a different and more intimate atmosphere outside.

Rules (Restaurant)

Very old school, with traditional food served on starched table clothes. Good option for an early pre-theatre supper if you're entertaining elderly relatives.

Mr Kong's (Restaurant)

Better Chinese food than most of the places in Chinatown, although the decor is 'cheap cafe' rather than 'fine dining'. Fine for big groups of mates but don't take your new, hot date there.

The best part about this place is the long walkway into the bar... but unless you're looking to be picked up by middle aged (albeit rich) men then avoid! Restaurant upstairs isn't great either.

Selfridges Selfridges (Department Store / Lingerie Shop / General Sports Shop / Food Hall)

The crème de la crème of department stores. All the usual but so much more stylish. Great shoe department and all the top names for unusual clothes, handbags, and vintage jewellery and dresses in the basement. If you're coming in to London for a days shopping, you probably wouldn't need to go anywhere else.

Match Match (Bar)

The bar is usually buzzing and packed, but I held my birthday party here this year and was amazed that unlike every other bar in London, they didn't charge me to book the room tucked away at the back of the bar, nor did they insist that I pay a minimum bar bill for the evening. Really fantastic option for a party of 40-50 people.

I don't feel as comfortable here as I do in their sister bar, Match in the West End. Same good cocktails are served though.

LMNT (Gastro Pub)

Yes, it's true, Dalston really does have a nice restaurant! Don't make a special trip up here from central London, but if you live nearby then you have to go.

The decor is wonderfully over the top Egyptian styling, with huge sphinxes set over the fireplace, and some of the tables set up in little boxes that you get to via a ladder. I think there's even a table set inside a huge urn! Food is not Egyptian, but Italian/ English (they do a roast dinner here on Sundays), and quite nice considering the location ;-)

You have to visit the 'facilities' whilst you're here - the murals on the toilet walls are a bit of a surprise. Mythical figures with huge penises and Grecian ladies being buggered - weird but fun.

Salisbury Tavern (Gastro Pub)

This Fulham pub has a smart restaurant attached to it, and serves food that is quite a few rungs better than pub grub. Nice to have as a popular local option if you can't be bothered to cook and have friends coming over.
