Savoy (Hotel)
09 October 2005
Have stayed in the Savoy either side of its sale. It's a grand hotel but now appears to lack the personal touch that should be the hallmark of true luxury hotels. Nothing concrete wrong with it but when one is paying in excess of £300 per night the choice in London is excellent and of this type of hotel the Conrad and Berkeley simply now appear to do it better.
Boxwood Cafe (Restaurant)

Took a friend for a birthday lunch to the Boxwood and it was superb. The waitress was a delight - friendly without being obtrusive and over-familiar and she even rustled up a culinary birthday "treat" for my friend who was delighted. The food was outstanding and less than £70 for the pair of us. Have already booked again.
Berkeley (Hotel)

I have now stayed at this hotel 3 times and have 2 more visits booked this year. Absolutely disastrous start with us being ushered into still-occupied rooms and a seeming lack of awareness of our booking. However to their credit the service has subsequently been exemplary and we have received complimentary upgrades along with follow-up telephone calls to establish that we were satisfied.
Boxwood Cafe is excellent both for food and service but the Blue Bar is full of corporate America and expense-account bonhomie. The Berkeley Spa and pool is unmissable. Gym good but small. Steam room and sauna excellent and immaculate.
