Orsay station was inaugurated in July 1900 and ended its career as a train station in 1939. Saved from destruction in 1968, President Valery Gicard d’Estaing gave it a future by creating a museum in the old station structure, and today it houses an impressive collection of 19th and 20th century paintings and sculpture.
